The Community Development Department is responsible for the City’s Comprehensive Plan, zoning, land use activities, code enforcement, building inspections and permitting. The Community Development department also serves as the liaison to economic development activities.

Planning & Zoning
The City’s Zoning Ordinance implements the City’s Comprehensive Plan by regulating how land may be used within the City. Each parcel in the City is assigned a zoning designation that describes the regulations under which that land may be used. The zoning code identifies allowable uses and sets standards such as minimum lot size, maximum building height, setbacks, and preservation buffers.
Planning and zoning activities are intended to protect, maintain, and develop a sustainable, attractive, safe, and healthy environment. Primary functions address property development and land use activities occurring in the City.
Planning and zoning activities are managed by the City Planner, who provides direction and leadership in implementing the goals, objectives, and policies of the Comprehensive Plan as adopted by the City Council.

The City Planner also provides technical assistance and staff support to the Planning Commission.
